Red Rocks Hike and Denver Deadlift

Saturday was a nice hike through the Red Rocks area just outside of Denver, and this morning was a deadlift workout. Not my best, unfortunately.

    Use this 3-step plan and take robotic action on it every day.

    Step #1 - Punish yourself every time you engage in the flaw. For example, when I quit swearing a couple of years ago, I put $10 in a swear jar. It worked! I 'cured' myself of cursing in just 6 days.

    Step #2 - Have an easy replacement for the flaw. To quit swearing, I started using other silly phrases, like "Sugar Shack" to replace my cursing.
     
    Step #3 - Get accountability. I told the world. I told my friends. They supported me, and it really helped.
     
    So share your flaw, goal, punishment, and plan with POSITIVE people, like on the TT Facebook page
     
    And then remember this...
     
    12-weeks is only 0.3% of your life.
     
    You can commit to ANYTHING for 0.3% of your life. It's easy!

    After all, the secret to your future is your daily habits.

    Take one small bad habit and replace it with some small good habit. Start easy. Keep working every day to develop good habits.
     
    Stay strong and get stronger.

    PPS - And here's the best NON-fitness advice you'll get this week...

    Do a "brain dump" at the end of the day to separate work from non-work. Set a hard "quitting time" for your workday. When that time comes, stop work, grab some paper, scribble out all related work thoughts, and put them away until tomorrow. Now go live your life for the rest of the day.

    #1 food ingredient to stop eating now

    Back in 2000, while attending a small science conference at the Holiday Inn in Barrie, Ontario, I discovered one ingredient NEVER to eat. Literally, you should NEVER eat this.
     
    And yet it is one of the most common artificial ingredients, and you've probably had a couple of grams today (possibly in the peanut butter that you thought was healthy).

    WOW. Eating just a tiny amount of this nasty ingredient can increase your risk of heart disease and make you store more and more visceral fat <= belly fat that's almost impossible to get rid of.

    TT Certification in Toronto

    Hey, I want to thank you for watching my Turbulence Training 10 Million Mission video, and for joining me on our TT Trainer teleseminar back in November of last year, or for using one of my TT Bootcamp programs. 
     
    Here's a quick update on your next TT Certification opportunities - and the most common reason I was fired as a trainer :).
     
    For the first time EVER, there will be a TT Certification in Canadia! It's coming up in Toronto on May 9-10th with Master Certified Turbulence Trainers, Brian Kalakay and Chris Lopez (who is also a Strong First Kettlebell instructor and will be happy to spend extra time helping you with your form on advanced kettlebell exercises).
     
    Chris and Brian are exceptional trainers and know how to bring the energy while being 'politely assertive' when it comes to correcting form.
     
    As you know, at Turbulence Training, we are sticklers for excellent exercise technique. In fact, back in my full-time training days, I was repeatedly fired by a few of my ultra-wealthy clients for insisting they stop talking, focus, and do exercise according to my rules.
     
    These multi-millionaires just weren't used to being told what to do...and I guess it bruised their ego that they couldn't handle me. But oh well, training people right matters more than appeasing rich people.
     
    That's why we spend so much time on correct exercise technique and fat loss program design at the TT Certification. Day One is devoted entirely to creating great workouts and hands-on exercise technique teaching.
     
    Chris and Brian will cover everything from beginner core training to advanced bodyweight training all the way through to all the Kettlebell exercises you desire to learn.

    60 Second Diet Trick

    Here's a 60-second diet trick that will help you lose fat faster, according to the scientific journal "Nutrition & Metabolism".
     
    Simply mix 10 grams of low-carb whey protein (I recommend BioTrust.com) with water and drink before two to three meals every day. The May issue of Men's Health magazine reported that you will lose fat faster when you do this.

    # 1 hip exercise to help you squat and lunge without pain

    "This exercise is downright stupid." Yep, that's what top experts, like Mikey Whitfield, Certified Turbulence Trainer, say when I show it to them. But then they use it and realize it is AMAZING.
     
    It's called the "SCREACH" - "Spiderman Climb with Reach". It works better than anything else to loosen the hips and help you squat and lunge WITHOUT pain.
     
    It's your #1 mobility and warm-up exercise. Here's what it looks like:
     
    Here's how you do it: 
    • Brace your abs. Start in the top of the pushup position.
    • Keep your abs braced, pick one foot off the floor, & slowly bring your knee up outside of your shoulder and touch your foot to the ground.
    • As you reach the top of the motion, rotate your upper body to point your arm toward the ceiling.
    • Keep your abs braced and slowly return to the start position.
    Mike Whitfield says:
    "I like to do 6 reps per side in my warm-up routine. But you can also do this in the middle of the day (especially if you're behind a desk all day). The key is to take these reps SLOW.
     
    Here's a sample warm-up Mikey likes to use...
    • Jumping Jacks (15)
    • Prisoner Lunge (6-8/side)
    • SCREACH (6/side)
    • Leg Swings (12/side)
    • Rest 30 seconds and repeat 1 more time
    If you want to PERMANENTLY improve your flexibility so you squat and lunge without pain - and get the incredible fat-burning benefits of these exercises, then you need to do more than simple hamstring stretches...
     
    My go-to fitness guru for hip mobility, Eric Wong, uses a series of exercises that allow his clients to squat and lunge WITHOUT pain.
      
     
    Get ready to move like you did back in the 80's and 90's! Your joints are going to feel 20-30 years younger with these simple moves you can do in minutes at home.

    Now that everything is back to normal, this week's workouts are:

    #1 - Lower Body

    Big total body warm-up

    1A) Squats
    1B) Box Jumps - sets of 2, and it wasn't until about the 4th set that power really kicked in...that's because my nervous system really seemed to need a long warm-up...often does

    2A) Front Squat
    2B) Good Morning

    That was it for the day. 4 sets of each.

    #2 - Upper Body - Meathead for Life!!!

    Requires a much smaller warm-up, upper body only, and you can do lower stretching between sets

    1A) Bench with Pause (#truth bench)
    1B) Chin-up with Knee-up

    2A) Close-Grip Bench
    2B) V-Grip Pulldown

    3A) DB Press
    3B) BB Row

    4) DB CSR 1&1/2 reps - going to experiment to see how this goes

    Superfoods Smoothie

    If you want to build muscle and lose fat at the same time, your post-workout nutrition needs to be perfect to support your goals.
     
    That means getting the right nutrients into your body to help you recover, burn calories, and keep you making progress towards to your fitness goals.
     
    Here's a delicious and perfect post-workout smoothie that you can try. It's
    called "Superfoods Peanut Butter and Jam":
    • 500 ml almond milk
    • 1 frozen ripe banana
    • 1 cup of strawberries
    • 1 tbsp chia seeds
    • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 2 dates or 1 tbsp maple syrup
    • 2 tbsp hemp seeds (or protein powder)
    Blend all ingredients in a blender. That's a lot, but it delivers two very delicious servings. Just cut the amounts in half if you only want one. It won't be very good to store this overnight because of the seeds.
     
    And yes, it really does taste amazing like a PB & J sandwich but obviously without the bread (that can leave you tired & sluggish). Like that?

    Smoothie Time (but not for Bally)

    If you or anyone you know has an aversion to smoothies, then this mouth-watering recipe is guaranteed to blow them away. I think it's amazing, and I got it from my former neighbor in Toronto, world-famous nutritionist and health guru, Yuri Elkaim. We used to live in the same condo building right beside an amazing dog park in Toronto, but Yuri and his wife had little Chihauhaus that didn't go to well with ol' Bally the Dog :).
     
    Now to be quite honest...This smoothie is easily the BEST green smoothie I've ever tasted. Even ol' Bally would slurp it right up, if he were allowed - which he is not! But that does not stop him from asking.
     
    It really is delicious. Here's the recipe for you to see for yourself... 
     
    Tangy Coco Spinach
     
    2 big handfuls of spinach 
    1 banana 
    1⁄2 cup strawberries 
    1-2 stalks celery 
    Juice of 1-inch piece of ginger 
    Juice of 1⁄2 lime 
    1 young coconut (water and meat) 
    250 ml water
     
    Directions: 
    Add ingredients to blender, blend, and enjoy.
     
    Since trying it for the first time not too longago, it's helped me convert the most skeptical and smoothie-averse people, which now means they can enjoy better health and more energy :)

    Farm TRX Workout

    Back out on the farm and it's time to hit the TRX.

    So glad you loved yesterday's killer core training circuit. Using a suspension trainer can get addicting and so I added an ab blasting superset.

    Nutrition Plan for Abs

    Did you know that the years of eating processed foods, lack of exercise, and normal eating patters have literally PROGRAMMED your body to burn NOTHING but calories and sugars from the foods you consume everyday...
     
    ...INSTEAD of burning off your ugly body fat? 
     
    In fact, today's exercise programs take way too much time and use old-school methods that cause you to crave more food and calories - especially calories from sugar - FORCING your body to burn sugars and waste away nothing but stored energy. 
     
    This means that EVERY time you eat and exercise your body is busy fighting a losing battle. BUT...
     
    What if there was a way to RESET your body's fat burning switch so that your body burns fat FIRST every time you move and exercise?
     
    Well there IS. It's a super simple 3-step metabolic primer from my good friend and Stubborn Fat Expert, Shaun Hadsall, that TURNS OFF your body's "addiction" to burning sugars, while making your most stubborn fat your "go to" energy source in ONLY 3 or 4 days. 
     
    STEP #1: Try to consume zero starches or fruits for 3 or 4 days in a row during the week.

    Some good examples to use are extra fish or krill oil, olive oil, coconut oil, grass fed butter and small amounts of raw nuts for fats -- spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, arugula, green beans, Brussels sprouts and cabbage are great choices for extra veggies.
     
    This will help provide all the fiber, vitamins, and minerals necessary to maximize fat-loss during a lower carb phase. 
     
    It will also DECREASE your cravings in a big way.
     
    STEP #3: Double your daily water intake when you deplete carbs. 
     
    Remember, for EVERY gram of carbs you eat over the weekend (or any other time) your body holds nearly 3 grams of water. 
     
    So if you had a few slices of pizza, some bread and a bowl of ice cream we're talking an extra 700 to 1000 grams of water sitting under your belly skin. 
     
    Consuming extra water is the fastest way to UNDO the damage of over-eating, getting rid of excess water retention, and facilitating other metabolic processes that burn fat. 
     
    A good rule of thumb is to consume at least 50-60% of your total body weight in ounces of water a few days after overeating. 
     
    After 3 or 4 days of using this strategy, your body and hormones will be PRIMED to burn PURE fat when you exercise. 
     
    You just have to make sure you're using the RIGHT TYPE of exercise or all this could be nothing but a waste of your time and energy.

    Weekend workouts

    Trained upper body push and pull at a 24-Hour Fitness yesterday after Day 1 of the TT Certification.

    Bench, Pullups, DB press, chest supported row, and V-grip pulldowns.

    This morning, a quick garage gym at Bedros Keuilian's (I'll take a photo of his sweet set-up), and then I have a flight to Denver.

    Last night, Bedros and his wife cooked for Dani, Kate, myself, and Cara Eckerman, CTT. It was a feast of wagyu beef (from Debragga.com), vegetables, and Di's famous cookies.

    This morning B will make me some eggs before I hit the airport. He's a good cook too, but dinner was all about Diana's work last night. She was in the kitchen all day. Crazy!

    The best breakfast that I ever did have was in Panama City. I was staying at the Hotel RIU and they brought me the biggest omelet and a giant bowl of the freshest fruit. It was a meal fit for a King.
     
    And that's what I'm going to teach you today: How to eat like a King (or Queen, of course!) and still lose belly fat, get lean, and tone your arms & abs.
     
    It can be done. You just need to know the nutritional truth, particularly the truth about a certain type of food.
     
    If you eat the WRONG foods, you're in trouble. If you eat the right foods, like I did in this breakfast at the Westin Hotel in Costa Mesa, California, last Thursday morning, then you'll be well on your way to losing weight - and maybe even getting abs like me and ol' Bally the Dog.
    I love the Westin brand of hotels for their extra effort on healthy traveling, such as their great gyms and "superfoodz" menu. This breakfast was 4 scrambled eggs (real eggs, not that 'egg mix' that hotels will try to serve you), extra olive oil, a double serving of steamed spinach, and Green Tea.
     
    It was a little too much food, but I man'd up and ate it all before my big leg workout at the local 24-Hour Fitness (of squats, low-box jumps, good mornings, and front squats).
     
    So enough of training like a workhorse (we'll focus on that tomorrow in our Monday Morning 10-Minute Miracle Workout series).

Spring will be in the air and that means he'll be super-excited to chase 'varmints' down by the old river that runs through our property. It also means he's going to be a wet and stinky dog, so he and I will be spending lots of time in the garage working on more fun, fast, and effective fat burning workouts.

    Diet Mistake

    Last night I made a big diet mistake. I had dinner at the awesome Hamamori Sushi restaurant in the fancy-schmancy South Coast Plaza here in Costa Mesa. Here's what I ate. Can you spot the problem? Look carefully...

    So many chemicals in the fish, I'm sure!
     
    Who knows how much Fukushima fallout was in the tuna, how much mercury was in the salmon, and in the octopus and shrimp?
     
    I was probably a chemical nightmare walking away from that delicious Ocean Salad. :)
     
    The trouble is that we all have chemicals inside of us. In fact, in 2005, a study by the American Red Cross found a shocking 287 chemicals inside our bodies, which included dioxins, phthalates, pesticides, Teflon byproducts, flame retardants and many others.
     
    There's no escaping this toxic burden.
     
    It's ALL inside your body right now and it's harming your cells, causing severe inflammation, clogging up your liver, stopping your body from getting rid of unwanted belly fat - and it's aging your body at an accelerated rate.
     
    Fortunately, there are few simple "tweaks" you can make to your diet, starting today, that can help your body eliminate this toxic burden and get your fat loss moving again, while helping you look and feel younger.

    Another 20 minute garage circuit

    there are almost zero reasons I would ever have someone use a machine over a bodyweight or dumbbell alternative. Here are a few 7-minute circuit workouts you should use instead (do each repetition with a slow and controlled pace):
     Beginner
    1) Lying Hip Extension – 30 seconds
    2) Plank – 30 seconds
    3) Beginner Bodyweight Row – 30 seconds
    4) 1-Leg Lying Hip Extension or Stability Ball Leg Curl – 30 seconds
    5) Kneeling or Regular Pushups – 30 seconds
    6) Bodyweight Wall Squats or Bodyweight Squats – 30 seconds
    7) Jumping Jacks or Run-in-Place – 30 seconds
    - Repeat the circuit 2 times for a total of 7-minute. If you have even more time, do up to 4 circuits with 1 minute of rest between each.
    - Take as much extra rest as you need to…or do 20 seconds of each exercise and rest for 10 seconds before the next move.
    Intermediate
    • Prisoner Squat – 30 seconds
    • Rocking Plank – 30 seconds
    • Total Body Extension or Med Ball Slam – 30 seconds
    • Stability Ball or Ab Wheel Rollout or TRX Fallout or Inchworm – 30 sec
    • X-Body Mountain Climber (alternating) – 30 seconds
    • Burpees – 20 seconds with 10 seconds rest
    • Side Plank- 15 seconds per side
    • - Repeat the circuit 2 times for a total of 7-minute. If you have even more time, do up to 4 circuits with 1 minute of rest between each.
    • - Take as much extra rest as you need to…or do 20 seconds of each exercise and rest for 10 seconds before the next move.

    1) Prisoner Squat – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    2) Pull-up – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    3) Close-Grip Pushups  – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    4) Med Ball Slam – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    5) Narrow-Stance Bodyweight Squat – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    - 30 second rest
    6) Prisoner Squat  – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    7) Plank – 60 seconds
    8) Bodyweight Row – 40 seconds, 20 seconds rest
    9) Burpee – 15 seconds seconds, 15 seconds rest
    10) Med Ball Slam – 30 seconds
    - Whew.
    - Rest 30 seconds, repeat one more time for about 20 minutes of heart-pounding action. Tough, but good, times.
    Forget the machines. Pick your level. Pound your workout.
